چکیده

Sugarcane is semiperennial and produces considerable biomass, forming an ideal habitat for insects. Most insects do not affect crops, but some compete with humans for sugar and by-products. Sugarcane stalkborers are key pests of this crop worldwide because they feed directly on the vegetative tissues that store sucrose, allowing the introduction of micro-organisms that affect yield and quality. Conversely, the crop habitat permits the development of many beneficial arthropods that limit borers and keep other pests in check. The regular use of insecticides is often undesirable if natural enemies are to have maximum impact and other means have to be used to improve the control of borers. Varietal resistance might well be one of the most valuable methods for implementing an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. For example, in the USA, predation and varietal resistance have been used with success for the management of the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis (Bessin & Reagan, 1993). Similarly, this method is often favoured in studies carried out by the main sugarcane producing countries (Macedo et al.,1978; Leslie & Keeping, 1996; Allsopp et al., 1996; Mukunthan and Mohanasundaram, 1998; Kakakhel et al., 1999). This paper describes several methods for assessing varietal resistance, and results obtained by CIRAD entomologists with AVAILABLE METHODS FOR ASSESSING VARIETAL

Improving biological control of stalk borers in sugarcane by applying silicon as a soil amendment

The sugarcane stalk borers, Sesamia spp. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are the most destructive sugarcane insect pests in Iran. The efficiency of Telenomus busseolae Gahan (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) used alone or in combination with silicon fertilization was investigated for controlling the sugarcane stalk borers under field conditions. The treatments were: a combination of silicon plus multiple rel...

The Development of an Improved Method for Evaluating Sugarcane for Resistance to Smut

The isolation from bud scales and partial characterisation of highly active, low molecular weight, germination inhibitors, in concentrations correlated quantitively with resistance of N52/219, N11, NCo376, and NCo293, holds promise for the development of a rapid, quantitative, chemical assay for evaluating sugarcane for pre-infectional resistance to smut. Histopathological studies on stalk and ...

Mexican rice borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) oviposition site selection stimuli on sugarcane, and potential field applications.

The Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini (Dyar) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a key pest of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) and rice, Oryza sativa L., in Texas, has not been controlled with chemical insecticides or biological agents, but some sugarcane varieties have shown degrees of resistance. Assessment of selected sugarcane leaf characteristics indicate that preference for oviposition sites is mostly...

Microorganisms affecting Post-Harvest Sucrose Losses in Sugarcane

Sucrose losses after cane harvest is one of the most important problems in sugarcane crop particularly for millers and farmers. Loss in sucrose after harvesting causes low sugar recovery in mills. There are a large number of factors associated with low sugar recovery such as varietal type, atmospheric conditions, time lag, etc. Sucrose losses occurring in postharvest sugarcane are generally of ...
